Ancient Tree Collapses In Enugu, Kills 18 Passengers

Tragedy struck on Tuesday when an accident claimed the lives of at least 18 passengers after a massive ancestral tree, known locally as “Ukwu Akpu Awhum,” toppled onto a commercial bus in the Awhum community of Udi Local Government Area, Enugu State.

ReportNaija gathered that the bus was fully loaded with passengers when the incident occurred during a heavy thunderstorm and rainfall.

The 18-seater minibus was traveling from Ukehe in Igbo-Etiti LGA to Enugu metropolis when the giant tree suddenly collapsed, crushing the vehicle and its occupants.

Residents rushed to the scene, but all passengers were reportedly killed on impact.

One community member, Charly Okeke, spoke of the shock that has gripped Awhum. He said that although branches had fallen from the ancient tree in the past, nothing of this scale had ever occurred before.

“Some people started tying red and white cloths around the trunk, seeking spiritual powers,” Okeke suggested, adding that such acts of desecration may have weakened the tree.

“I suspect this may have caused the tragedy,” he said.

The community has been thrown into mourning as families and neighbors grapple with the devastating loss.

Many residents are now urging greater caution around sacred and ancestral sites, particularly amid the torrential rains that have lashed parts of the state in recent days.

Officials from the state emergency agencies and local authorities are expected to visit the scene to assess safety conditions and provide support to the bereaved families.

As of the time of filing this report, Enugu State authorities have yet to issue any statement.

Billboard Labels Rema A ‘one-hit Wonder’, Faces Backlash

American music publication Billboard has come under fire after resharing an article that classified Nigerian Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, as a “one-hit wonder.”

The post, shared Sunday on the magazine’s official X account, referenced a June 2025 ranking titled “The 25 Biggest One-Hit Wonders of the 21st Century,” where Rema was placed at No. 6 based on the U.S. chart performance of his 2022 global smash hit Calm Down, particularly its remix featuring American pop star Selena Gomez.

“‎After releasing the original “lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-wo-wo-wo-wo”-ing version of “Calm Down” in 2023, Nigeria’s Rema noticed it breaking on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart.

He took a swing and recruited Gomez for the female vocal and, shockingly, she agreed. “I had my fingers crossed,” he told Billboard,” the article reads.

According to Billboard, while the original version of Calm Down gained traction on the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, the remix propelled it into mainstream success, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The publication noted that although Rema has since recorded six top-10 entries on the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart as of June 7, 2025, he has not returned to the Hot 100.

The No. 3-peaking ‘Calm Down’ was obviously not veteran pop superstar Gomez’s only hit, but Rema has yet to make it to the Hot 100 again, although he has landed six top 10s on U.S. Afrobeats Songs, through the June 7, 2025, chart.”

The ranking quickly sparked debate online, with critics arguing that the label fails to reflect Rema’s broader international success. Many pointed to his extensive catalogue, including tracks such as Dumebi, Iron Man, and Woman, as well as his debut album Rave & Roses, which reached the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart. Supporters also highlighted his global tours, festival appearances at events like Coachella and Wireless Festival, and collaborations with artists such as Chris Brown and 6lack.

Others, however, defended Billboard’s rankings, noting that the classification appears to be strictly based on performance within the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, rather than global streaming numbers or international chart achievements.

The renewed attention has reignited discussions about the limitations of U.S.-centric metrics in measuring the global reach of Afrobeats, a genre that has expanded significantly beyond American chart frameworks in recent years.

Rema has not publicly responded to the ranking as of press time

Pope Leo Rejects Trump’s ‘board Of Peace’ Invite And Backs UN To Solve Global Cr

Pope Leo XIV has turned down Donald Trump’s invitation to join his so-called “Board of Peace”, a senior Vatican official said.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, told reporters on Tuesday that the Pope had a number of concerns about the initiative and that he “will not participate” as a result.

“For us, there are... some critical issues that should be resolved,” he said. “One concern is that at the international level it should above all be the UN that manages these crisis situations. This is one of the points on which we have insisted.”

Mr Trump has invited a number of world leaders to join the board, originally conceived as a body to supervise the ceasefire in Gaza and coordinate the Strip’s reconstruction following the conflict between Hamas and Israel.

Its scope has since been expanded, with Mr Trump saying it would be well-placed to address a range of global disputes. Some see it as an effort by the US president to establish and alternative multilateral forum to the United Nations, which he has repeatedly criticised as not being fit for purpose.

It was Cardinal Parolin who earlier confirmed that the Pope had been invited to join the board by Mr Trump. He said in January that “the Pope has received the invitation, and we are considering what to do; we are looking into it.”

He said at the time that the invitation to join the board “requires some time to answer” and that the request “will not be to participate financially” because “we are not in a position to do so”.

Mr Trump claims the Board of Peace has already committed more than $5bn (£3.67bn) to help rebuild Gaza.

Arab states have also expressed anger at the inclusion of Benjamin Netanyahu, citing the Gaza war that has resulted in the deaths of 72,000 Palestinians.

And there have been concerns about the prominent role of former UK prime minister Tony Blair – one of the first names announced by Mr Trump in connection to the initiative. Mr Blair is expected to sit on the board’s founding executive despite longstanding criticism over Britain’s involvement in the Iraq war.

Despite the controversy, dozens of countries – including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Hungary, and the United Arab Emirates – have committed to joining the board.

Pope Leo has repeatedly criticised Mr Trump’s policies since being named the first American pontiff. In October last year, he questioned whether the president’s hardline immigration policies were in line with the Catholic Church’s “pro-life” values.

“Someone who says I am against abortion but I am in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don’t know if that’s pro-life,” he told the media in Rome.

At the time, the White House pushed back on the comments. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said she “would reject there was inhumane treatment of illegal immigrants in the United States under this administration”.

“This administration is trying to enforce our nation’s laws in the most humane way possible, and we are upholding the law. We are doing that on behalf of the people of our country who live here.”

In November the Pope backed a message from US bishops criticising the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, including mass deportations and the treatment of migrants. “I think we have to look for ways of treating people humanely, treating people with the dignity that they have. If people are in the United States illegally, there are ways to treat that. There are courts, there’s a system of justice,” he said.

“But when people are living good lives, and many of them for 10, 15, 20 years, to treat them in a way that is extremely disrespectful to say the least – and there’s been some violence unfortunately – I think that the bishops have been very clear in what they said.

“I would just invite all people in the United States to listen to them.”

In January this year, Pope Leo delivered a powerful speech in which he condemned the growing global “zeal for war”. While he did not call out Mr Trump by name, his address came after the US military operation to forcibly remove Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro and bring him to American soil.

“A diplomacy that promotes dialogue and seeks consensus among all parties is being replaced by a diplomacy based on force,” Leo told diplomats from 184 countries. “War is back in vogue and a zeal for war is spreading.”

Ooni planning title for Igboho – Monarch openly tells Tinubu to release Kanu

The Igwe of Ezema Olo in Ezeagu LGA, Enugu State, His Royal Highness, Ambassador Dr Lawerence Agubuzu has asked President Bola Tinubu to released Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and return him to Kenya or the United Kingdom if they are not comfortable with his presence in Nigeria.[/b]

Kanu was arrested in Kenya during the administration of late Muhammadu Buhari and returned to Nigeria to face trial for terrorism charges.

The IPOB leader was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court last year and is now cooling his feet at the maximum security prison in Sokoto.

Many prominent Igbo leaders have been pleading with Tinubu to free the agitator.

The monarch warned that keeping the pro-Biafra leader in jail was causing young people in the Southeast to become more upset and restless.

Agubuzu spoke up during the 2026 National Traditional and Religious Leaders Summit on Health, which took place at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

He said, “Having come now to Abuja and listened to His Royal Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, who was gingering all of us to work as a family, to work as a team, to see Nigeria as one, I said maybe this is good.

“But when you look at it, this same Ooni of Ife is planning to confer a very high honour on Sunday Igboho who, in my own part of the country, we see him as the South west counterpart of Nnamdi Kanu and the Imperial Highness does not seem to understand the pain in my heart when Nnamdi Kanu is in Sokoto. So, sir the ball is your court.

“Bring this man out. If we don’t want him in Nigeria, send him back to Kenya or London, where he came from. Please do something about this. Agubuzu told the President,

“We can’t move forward in this country unless we face the truth.”

DAILY POST reports that the summit, with the theme “The Role of Traditional and Religious Leaders in Advancing the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative,” was held to increase community involvement in health system reforms.

The event, however, took an unexpected turn during the goodwill messages when Agubuzu pressed the President about Kanu’s fate.

He said, “I must tell you, Mr. President, that I don’t feel very happy because you weren’t here in the morning when the Ooni of Ife gave the opening speech and was encouraging everyone to work together as one.”
